Extech SDL310 Anemometer/Data Logger
The Extech SDL310 is a vane-type thermo-anemometer that simultaneously measures air velocity and temperature, and logs data to an SD card in Excel format. It offers both manual and automatic logging, supports external thermocouple input, and is useful for HVAC, ventilation, and environmental monitoring tasks.
Description
The SDL310 combines airflow measurement and temperature logging into one compact tool. It uses a low-friction vane sensor on a cable (approx. 1 m) to measure air velocity up to ~4930 ft/min (about 25 m/s), while also monitoring ambient air temperature to 50 °C. It displays both values on its dual-line LCD, allowing users to view velocity and temperature concurrently.
Data logging is a key strength: users can manually store up to 99 readings or automatically log large volumes (on the order of millions) to an SD card, with timestamps and in a spreadsheet-compatible format. The sampling rate is adjustable (from 1 to 3600 seconds), and functions like MIN, MAX, and data hold are built in. The SDL310 also supports connection to a PC for real-time streaming of data via its interface.
To broaden its usefulness, the device includes a thermocouple input (Type K/J), allowing measurement of higher-temperature environments. It features auto power-off (which can be disabled), backlight, and configurable units for velocity (e.g. m/s, ft/min, km/h, mph, knots). Its design emphasizes portability: powered by six AA batteries and packaged with a hard carrying case, it is suited for field inspections, duct balancing, and airflow verification.
