The Extech EX840A is a rugged, multifunctional clamp meter combining high-current measurement, true-RMS accuracy, and an integrated infrared thermometer. It can measure AC/DC current up to 1000 A and surface temperature (up to ~270 °C), making it a versatile tool for electricians, plant maintenance, and troubleshooting in industrial and commercial electrical systems.
Description
The EX840A is engineered as an all-in-one instrument for field professionals, merging a clamp meter, digital multimeter, and IR thermometer into a single device. For current measurements, it handles both AC and DC up to 1000 A using true RMS to accurately capture irregular waveforms and inrush events. It also measures AC/DC voltages up to 1000 V, resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode/continuity, and supports additional functions like peak and inrush capture.
What really sets it apart is the built-in non-contact infrared thermometer with laser pointer, which enables you to spot overheating components, motors, or connections without touching them. The IR sensor covers a temperature range from about –50 °C to +270 °C, and works with a distance-to-spot ratio of 8:1. The housing is ergonomically designed with a large 43 mm (1.7-inch) jaw opening, enabling measurement on thick conductors, and its double-molded grip aids one-hand operation.
To deal with challenging measurement environments, the EX840A includes a low-pass filter to reduce noise interference and a low-impedance mode (LoZ) to avoid ghost voltages. The backlit 6000-count LCD ensures good visibility even in dim lighting. Safety is addressed with a CAT IV-600 V rating, and the unit is built to endure field use. The meter is commonly supplied with test leads, a type-K thermocouple probe, battery, and carrying pouch.
